- UNPACKING NAMRATAA SHRESTHA She’s a rare personality whose highs and lows have been played out in the public eye. Namrataa Shrestha continues to evoke curiosity and appreciation from people near and far. Covering this issue, the actress makes a return in the avatar of XIRA (pronounced JAIRA) who we will see in cinemas across the country from 23rd of August. Unlike many actresses, Shrestha has been able to play a wide range of characters in Nepali cinema from the girl next door in Sano Sansar, a mute character in Maun, a gang member in Chhadke and Tandav and a blind woman in Classic. At a time when public figures saturate themselves with heavy use of social media, Namrataa continues to be that figure who people actually want to know, see and hear more from. Making her very first appearance on Party Nepal is XIRA herself. Get to know Namrataa as she talks through her career, journey and mental health. You’ve been in Nepali cinema for over ten years and been part of the entertainment scene for longer. When you look back, what is one thing that makes you proud about your journey? NAMRATAA: My choice; I chose and still choose to be the best I can be. Each project, each character I played- I thought about it carefully- whether I will be able to do justice to it. And this choice to give my best in everything I do, helped me to evolve into the person I am today. While cinema has made much progress and we are slowly seeing better stories and indie films as well, mainstream cinema still lacks in many areas. As an actor do you feel that you receive roles that challenge you and intellectually stimulate you to do better? NAMRATAA: So far, I have been fortunate to have been able to select such challenging roles! ‘Xira’ being the recent one. I’m in a completely new avatar! I was going through your film catalog and realized that I’ve seen every single film of yours. This month we will see the release of XIRA where you play a mixed martial arts fighter, what reason made you sign the film and is there any common grounds between Namrataa Shrestha and XIRA? NAMRATAA: I signed the film because there has been nothing like it in the history of modern cinema in Nepal; it’s almost like a first superhero character for Nepal. Yes, there is common ground between ‘Xira’ and I; we stand up for what we believe is right. And we both believe in being the best version of ourselves. XIRA sees you working with quite a team of new actors from Srijana Regmi, Samrat Magar and more – can you recollect a memorable moment from the scene to share with us? NAMRATAA: It was fun to work with them. We had training and workshops together. There are lots of memories I can't pick just one. Unlike many other public figures, you haven’t hidden the fact that you’re in a relationship and have openly spoken about your previous relationships. What’s an advice that you follow yourself to make your relationship fruitful? NAMRATAA: Precisely why I don’t shy away in speaking about my personal relationships. I am open. I am honest. And I think that’s what makes any relationship fruitful. Be who you are. The truth sets you free they say….so stay truthful, first to yourself…and the rest fits in automatically. Social media is a space that brings incredible joy to many. Unfortunately, for many it also creates much pressure, affecting ones mental health and relationship with other users. You’ve been vocal about your mental health in the recent past. What are the ways that you manage your mental health? NAMRATAA: Social media has been an amazing platform for every individual either to promote or grow but we have to be very careful regarding how we take things that we see on social media. About my mental health, I have been taking very good care of it. I meditate, listen to music and read. I make sure I say No to things that I don’t want. And don’t be in a place where I am anxious. Platforms such as TikTok and Instagram are proving to be a fast-track lane for people to gain visibility online. Many are aspiring actors and dancers. What’s your advice to the people who want to be a part of cinema? NAMRATAA: ‘Insta-famous’ is temporary. Hard work is permanent. So my advice is; build your foundation. So that when the storm comes, your roots are deep and you survive, and then you flourish. Cinema is an art. And if you want to be a part of this industry, you have to understand that art is created through hard work, respect and love. What do you get up to when you aren’t working and are completely free? NAMRATAA: I wake up to play with my dogs, listen to music, watch movies & read books. That’s what makes me happy ? You also climbed Mt Lobuche earlier this year. How did that experience go? NAMRATAA: Heaven on earth. Absolutely. Nepali films are sometimes a hit and sometimes a complete miss! Tell us in few lines why XIRA will be worth watching this month? NAMRATAA: Please allow me to leave you to be the judge of that. Our teaser, and two of our songs are out. Our trailer will soon be out. We want our work to speak for it’s worth. ☺ COMPLETE THE SENTENCE: The first time I said ‘I love you’ and meant it was: I don’t remember. But I always mean it when I say it. I have never: cried in public. A film that I walked out of in a cinema was: There are a few ? I normally like to: listen while watching movies. I look after my mental health by meditating and consulting with doctors. NAMRATAA PICKS: Thamel or Jhamsikhel (THAMEL) An office guy or an adventure guy (ADVENTURE GUY) Jeans or dresses (JEANS) iPhone or Android (iPHONE) Kick or Punch (BOTH)
